Personal Development Programme

The curriculum provided by St Lawrence Primary extends far beyond the academic curriculum. We support our pupils to develop in many diverse aspects of school life. Through our extensive programme of personal development from Nursery to Year 6, we plan high quality opportunities in a carefully planned and sequenced way with the intention that our pupils will learn and remember important knowledge they can use now and throughout their lives. We want our pupils to leave St Lawrence being responsible, respectful and active citizens who are able to play their part and be actively involved in public life as adults.

We want our pupils to have a deep understanding of British Values and ensure they understand that difference is a positive. We are an inclusive school where no discrimination exists and there are equal opportunities for all of our pupils. We develop our pupils’ character in every experience we provide. Our core values: Respect, Courage, Hope and Perseverance are central to our school life alongside our use of restorative justice principles.

Our Personal Social Health and Education curriculum is age-appropriate and tailored to meet the needs of our pupils. It includes mental health and wellbeing, physical health (including healthy lifestyles), learning about staying safe and economic understanding. A key element is Relationships Education which includes healthy relationships and an understanding of consent and safety online.

To develop pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development children are taught and encouraged to: understand and appreciate the range of different cultures in the school and further afield; show respect for different faiths and cultural diversity; show respect for the different protected characteristics; use of a range of social skills in different contexts; participate in a variety of communities and social settings; recognise the difference between right and wrong and understand consequence; investigate and offer reasoned views about moral and ethical issues.

Our pupils have access to a wide and rich set of experiences (including cultural experiences) providing a meaningful and memorable context to learning. Trips, visitors and enrichment activities are integral to learning and enhance pupils’ engagement.  50 Things to do before you leave St Lawrence is central to these opportunities.

Residential Visits

We value the educational and social experiences that children can gain from residential visits and consider them an integral part of the children’s education. Our programme of residential visits follows the National Curriculum requirements and also supports the social and personal development of our children.  At St Lawrence, we ensure that every child that wants to attend a residential visit is given the opportunity during their time in primary school.  Our residential programme includes the following visits:

Year 3 and 4 - Frontier Centre

The children go on their first residential visit in the summer months of Year 3 or Year 4.  They visit the Frontier Centre in Irthlingborough.  The centre is set in our local area in the heart of England and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The centre has 122 acres of young-woodland, a river and lake for water sports and open grounds with stunning views across Stanwick Lakes nature reserve along the picturesque Nene Valley. The children take part in a range of instructed activities including: climbing, kayaking, archery and fencing.

For many children, this is the first significant time they’ve spent away from home, but by the end of their school residential adventure trip, their confidence has grown massively.

Year 5 - Condover Hall

Year 5 visit Condover Hall in the autumn term of Year 5 with a focus on building strong relationships and developing their independence.  Condover Hall is further afield than the Frontier Centre which builds children's resilience for being away from home.  They offer a huge range of physical, mental and social activities which the children love getting involved in.  Activities that are chosen differ from those at the Frontier Centre to offer children experiences of trying new things and challenging themselves physically and mentally.  Activities include: zip wire, Jacob's Ladder, buggy building and many more.

Year 6 - Yorkshire Dales

Year 6 visit the Yorkshire Dales in their final term of primary school.  This residential visit gives the children the opportunity to develop and apply the skills they have acquired on the earlier residential within the beautiful Yorkshire Dales countryside.  Whether it be gorge scrambling, caving, wild swimming or climbing a mountain, the children achieve a sense of accomplishment in every activity they take part in.  Pupils’ self-development is apparent throughout the trip as they discover new interests and disciplines and the teamwork of the adventures builds on the citizenship aspect of the National Curriculum.

Whole School Adventures

At St Lawrence, we are passionate about giving children opportunities that broaden their experiences and build cultural capital.  Throughout their school journey, we aim to ensure that every child has the opportunity to visit the seaside on a whole school trip and visit the pantomime.  These are adventures and experiences we believe children should experience at least once in their childhood.
